Environmental Services

Mt. Hoy

The Environmental Services Department serves the residents of DuPage County by providing several urban services. In the past, the solid waste disposal needs of DuPage County were served by accepting residential and commercial refuse at landfills located on District property. The revenues collected from the refuse disposed at the landfills are now part of an ongoing (non-tax supported) revenue stream that benefits a variety of District developments and operations.

The hills at the Blackwell, Greene Valley, and Mallard Lake forest preserves are examples of how landfills can provide recreational opportunities today and for many years to come. As the landfills are converted for recreational use, they will be landscaped to provide an interesting visual experience for forest preserve visitors. The Environmental Services Department also manages the clean-up or remediation of several contaminated parcels of land the District has acquired over the years. Once the parcels are remediated and restored, they can be returned to the residents of DuPage County for their use. The remediations are also funded by revenues the District received from the landfills and not by tax dollars.
