Spring in the Forest Preserves
Spring is the best time of year to hear frogs. In early spring, chorus frogs begin to gather by the water and sing to attract mates. In summer, chorus frogs are much harder to spot because they bury themselves in the mud to escape from the sun. Toads begin to sing later in the season, and bullfrogs start their "jug-o-rum" song even later. Bullfrogs don't sing to attract a mate, however; they sing to mark their territory.
Spring is also when most animal babies are born. Baby squirrels, rabbits and baby birds are all born in spring.
Spring is the season when most forest wildflowers bloom, because they get the most sunlight before the trees get their leaves.
