Habitat Welcomes Sandhill Cranes

Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn introduced two state-threatened sandhill cranes to their new home, an enclosed wetland-bird habitat.

The cranes, Pui, a 20-year-old female, and Nebula, a 14-year-old male, resided at St. James Farm in Winfield for a number of years. The center, which is owned and operated by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, received the cranes as part of the District's acquisition of St. James Farm.

Born in captivity, the sandhill cranes were too accustomed to human care to return to the wild. The habitat will allow for continued professional care of the cranes and serve as a new educational component at the center.

Located on the center’s nature trail, the exhibit features a secure double-gated entry, a shelter and a shallow pond for the cranes to wade and forage.

Willowbrook Wildlife Center provides care and medical treatment for injured and orphaned native wildlife as well as other wildlife-related exhibits, programs and resources for DuPage County residents. For information, call (630) 942-6200.
